Muradian, Moore and Fattman Announce Northbridge Fire Department Grant

December 19th 2019 - BOSTON – Representative David K. Muradian, Jr. (R-Grafton), Senator Michael O. Moore (D- Millbury) and Senator Ryan C. Fattman (R- Sutton) are excited to announce that the Baker-Polito Administration has awarded the Northbridge Fire Department  a Firefighter Turnout Gear Grant.

This grant program is available to help Fire Departments throughout the Commonwealth provide gear and equipment to limit firefighters’ exposure to cancer-causing chemicals on the job. As many people know, there is an increased risk for occupational hazards, such as cancers, faced by first responders. Replacing gear regularly is a financial burden, and one most departments find challenging. The Firefighter Turnout Gear Grant program will provide firefighters in 144 departments new equipment, such as new hoods and gloves, for structural firefighting activities. Given that the head and hand areas are high-risk areas for dangerous chemicals to enter the body, these new materials will help reduce hazardous exposure.

“First responders in our Commonwealth do so much to protect and maintain safety within our communities,” said Representative Muradian, who serves on the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security. “This grant program helps provide essential equipment, such as gloves and hoods, to our fire departments in an effort to assist them in protecting themselves. In a profession where safety is of the utmost importance, providing these men and women with effective gear is crucial.”

“Firefighters wake up, put on their uniform, and are faced with the uncertainty of not knowing what each day will bring,” said Senator Moore, who serves as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.  “This equipment is critical to ensuring that firefighters in Northbridge have additional layers of protection against workplace hazards.”

“The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has said that firefighters are more susceptible to cancer than the general public and it is critical that our fire departments have the equipment to protect the men and women who work so hard to protect our communities,” said Senator Fattman. “I thank the Baker-Polito administration for providing these important funds to the Town of Northbridge.”

“We would like to thank Representative Muradian, Senator Moore and Senator Fattman for their support for the fire service. The Northbridge Fire Department has received a $3,135 Firefighter Turnout Gear Grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) and the Department of Fire Services (DFS). The Northbridge Fire Department will be able to purchase 30 hoods for personal protection during firefighting operations. This gear will protect our firefighters from the immediate risks associated with fighting fires in dangerous environments, and just as importantly, protect them from the delayed risk of occupational cancers caused by exposure to the toxic chemicals produced during fires. As always we appreciate Representative Muradian, as well as Senators Moore and Fattman for their awesome support for public safety and assistance in the Northbridge Fire Department receiving this grant,” said Fire Chief White.

The Northbridge Fire Department will receive $3,135.00 through the Firefighter Turnout Gear Grant program.
