Annual fundraiser supports Dana-Farber cancer research
March 9th 2018 BOSTON – State Representative David K. Muradian, Jr. (R-Grafton) recently took part in the annual Saving by Shaving event to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on Thursday, March 8th.
He was joined by Governor Charlie Baker, Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton, State Representatives Timothy Whelan (R-Brewster), Paul Tucker (D-Salem) Joseph McGonagle (D-Everett) and Michael Day (D-Stoneham). Other participants included New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Red Sox President Sam Kennedy, and Jim Braude, host of Greater Boston and co-host of Boston Public Radio. They were among hundreds of volunteers who agreed to have their heads or beards shaved to help raise money for cancer research.
The sponsor of the event, Granite Telecommunications CEO Rob Hale, agreed to donate $10,000 to Dana-Farber for each legislator’s shave and $5,000 for each employee. In addition, he offered $500,000 for the individual shaves of Governor Baker, Tom Brady and Sam Kennedy. This year’s fundraiser took place at the company’s Quincy headquarters and raised a total of $6.5 million.
“I want to thank Rob Hale and the Hale family, as well as the Granite Telecommunications staff, for hosting such an outstanding event,” said Representative Muradian. “I know that my family, like so many other families, has been touched by cancer and it was a humbling experience to be able to take part in.”
Representative Muradian also invited his good friend Colin Spinney of Grafton to participate as well. His presence had a positive impact on the event as he is a cancer survivor himself.
“Colin is truly a star and having the opportunity to be able to partake in this event with him made it that much more special,” stated Representative Muradian. “If we all had Colin’s drive and determination, not to mention his sense of humor and compassion, the world would be a much better place!”
Since 2014, Saving by Shaving has raised $14.7 million for Dana-Farber. Combined with its other fundraising efforts, Granite Telecommunications has donated nearly $18 million to cancer research.
